Baby Got Kammback: 1972 Chevrolet Vega GT

Sixty five hundred bucks doesn’t get you much in a classic car these days, particularly with one that has a sweet Kammback wagon shape. Except here we get a V4 engine…wait, that’s not right. This isn’t a Lancia Fulvia or a Saab Sonett, this is a Vega, which means it has some kind of SOHC inline-4 with an alloy block and a cast iron head (who said that Saab designed engines up-side-down?) You won’t get matching wheels, but for original paint classic with good glass, this thing looks rad. Find this 1972 Chevrolet Vega GT offered for $6,500 in San Gabriel Valley, CA via craigslist. I’m rarely in favour of swapping an LS in anything. But this wagon is crying out for one and a T56 transmission. Also settle on one wheel type.
What you are trying to say is that a Lancia V4 engine swap IS the correct answer in this case. I agree.
The drivetrain , brakes, etc. from a Camaro Turbo 1LE would be an amusing swap. You know keep it Chevy four cylinder.
My buddy’s father used to have a Lancia with a four speed on the column! How cool is that?
I know an LS swap is a temptation, but in this car, the first full throttle launch would probably twist the frame through 20 degrees and lift one of the front tires off the ground from now on. These aluminum block Vega engines were problems, and I am surprised to see the original mill still in this one. Looks like a candidate for a super duty iron duke, if you could source one.
