The seller of this next vehicle really knows what he/she is doing and takes some nice photos of a baby blue Benz highlighted against the blue sky…but I really don’t care because I owned one of these years ago and I really want this one! Behold the glory that is Klaus, my 1977 Mercedes Benz 240D. 

We named him Klaus, after Klaus Meine from the Scorpions. He’s German and 100% metal!!

PREVIOUS HISTORY:

The original Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Booklet came with the car. It spent 1977 to 1979 in Europe. The first service was done at Pilino Ferrari located in Verona, Italy. The 3000 mile service was performed at Laos Alfa Romeo located in Paris, France. It then made its way to White Plains NY, then Lakeland, Florida. From there it spent a lot of years in Albuquerque NM. This explains the solid, straight, rust free body. Some of the later entries in the book are kind of a mess to be honest.

We don’t have much information from about 1993 to 2014. We know that the car spent the 90’s through 2014 in California. Whoever had it didn’t put many miles on it. The gentleman we bought the car from lived in Elkhart, IN. 

CURRENT:

This is a remarkable low option car. To my way of thinking, that means there is less to go wrong. It has crank up windows, a manual transmission and no sunroof. Manual antenna mast. The backseat of the car is cloth, not MB TEX. We have another back seat frame and it will go with the car, if you want it. When we bought the car, the passenger side carpet was threadbare and falling apart, so we removed it and placed a towel underneath the floor mat. It has an aftermarket Alpine radio. We do not have the manual for the Alpine, nor do we have the original radio. The car has been garaged for the time we have owned it.

The body is straight and rust-free. The floorpans are solid and appear to be original. The trunk lid looks like it has been replaced, but the paint matches the rest of the car perfectly. Panel gaps are straight and correct. The trim on the car is all there, and is in excellent condition for its age. All chrome shines as it should. 

Mechanically, this car is great condition. A/C works great, and blows ice cold. The odometer works as it should, and the clock holds time accurately. The idle adjustment knob also works. When we bought the car in 2015, the lower control arm bushings, steering center link, idler arm, steering damper, rear shocks, driveshaft flex discs, and transmission mounts were replaced, along with the upper control arm bushings. Valve cover gasket was replaced. We also replaced the glow plug relay. The parking brake cable was serviced and replaced, along with the drive belts. The brake vacuum pump was rebuilt in January, and all brake lines were cleaned and reinstalled. The brake hoses were also replaced during this service. This car is my son’s daily driver, and we have had the car professionally serviced and maintained since we have owned it. All the service records go with the car. The central locking system has been disabled when we bought it, and we never bothered to fix it. The doors can be locked manually.

The car is his daily driver and the mileage will continue to go up.
