1958 Goggomobil TS400 Race Car formerly owned by CBS Evening News Anchor Walter Cronkite.
It
was raced by Cronkite at the Little LeMans at Lime Rock Park in 1958
where it placed 23rd. Following the race it was featured in Autosport
Magazine’s August 1958 Edition.
The
2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine is bored .40 over, ported and polished,
advanced timing, rebuilt crank, and custom headers. It runs on C16 race
fuel.
In
2014 this car underwent a full rotisserie restoration to the correct
specs from when it was owned by Cronkite. It is restored to show
quality concours standards.
This
Goggomobil has incredible ownership, race, and show provenance. It is

Festival 33 in 2015. It has been invited to and displayed at the Hilton
Head Concours d’Elegance in 2014 and the Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance

That's news to me…
is that the way it is?
Wow. Provenance up the kazoo. 23rd place!
I it take Walter wasn't much of a car guy.
He could have swung for something Eyetalian, a 356, or any Brit he wanted.
But no, a No-Goggomobile? Walter, Walter, Walter. I am very disappointed in you.
He was probably "cheap" too if he was "racing" a Goggomobil!
I don't know how long he stuck with the whole racing thing, a lot of guys who ended up overseas in the '40s and '50s came home with a jones for little cars that sounded like popping popcorn or small British tractors.
Cronkite's thing, so far as the public record indicates, involved floating things with big canvas triangles up on a pole.
