Aluminum Space Frame: 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro

There is something supremely right with the first generation Audi A8 (1994-2002). It wasn’t the first executive car built by Audi to compete with the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-series and Lexus LS, but it was the first to sit on an all aluminum monocoque frame. Today’s example is fitted with the 4.2 liter V8 (instead of the basic V6) which means it has Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system and looks as stately and perfect as when it left the factory. Find this 1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro offered for $7,800 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

I owned a 99 just like this in Anthracite gray. These are perfect sedans in every way except for the one that matters the most. At about 80,000 miles, they start giving up everywhere. The auto trans is a special source of high mileage trouble, head gaskets and CV joints also, and you do not want to risk running it past the timing belt change interval. The radio display croaks around then, and so does the odo display, along with random bits and pieces you didn’t even know were there. Such a shame. The chassis is sublime, the interior is beautiful, and when healthy, it runs like a private jet.
Sounds very…German.
