Aerocoupe for NASCAR: 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2
This next car had me confused for a few minutes. The seller lists it as a Pontiac 2+2…and there was a model of Poncho called the 2+2 that was a full sized Catalina based big brother to the GTO…but this mid eighties thing has some interesting NASCAR aero looks…which reminded me of a car that we had called the Aerocoupe in the past…but Pontiac didn’t use the Aerocoupe name (that was used on the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS version) on their version of the custom aero nose, bubble glass back, and fiberglass trucklid with spoiler…they inexplicably called it the Grand Prix 2+2. Find this 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 offered for $14,000 in Dayton, OH via craigslist. Tip from Jeff.

This is the car that taught me the term “spiff.” I spent summers in college working at the local Honda – Pontiac dealer cleaning, prepping and detailing new/used inventory. One of these sat on the showroom floor for at least a year. My co-worker explained it had a $500 spiff for the salesperson successful in selling it. Seemed like a lot of coin on top of the commission at that time; wonder what that would be in today’s dollars. The takeaway: rare does not always equate to desirable/valuable.
Way back in the Stone Age, when I sold cars, the owner of the dealership put a spiff on his 1986 Mustang SVO demo. I sold it, but these cars were a very tough sell when the 5.0 was cheaper and faster.
