A Better Fiero: 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver

This next car comes as a tip from David in Tampa who writes: To my eyes, this is the best iteration of a Fiero possible. I’m sure there are many who’d slap me for this opinion; they need to chill, it’s not like I insulted their wife. Ohhh man, when I opened this link I was so upset by the car that I wanted to slap David’s wife. I’m just joking, this is the best Fiero you will ever gaze your eyes upon, which you can only do for a moment because it is literally the Ark of the Covenant for Fiero people. Find this 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver offered for $24,750 in Ft Lauderdale, FL via ebay.

Driving a small car large?
Fiero…huh, I always figured they were Oldsmobile based or something.
Wow. More than I ever wanted to know about Zimmers (but fascinating stuff, so I’m sharing):
“The Zimmer Golden Spirit was the flagship of the Zimmer Motorcars Corporation with more than 1,500 produced during its production run from 1978 to 1988. The original Golden Spirit was built using a Ford Mustang chassis and drivetrain.
The second Zimmer Motorcars Corporation offering was the mid-engined Pontiac Fiero-based Quicksilver which was built between 1984 and 1988. The Quicksilver is a two-seat personal luxury car designed by former General Motors designer Don “D.A.” Johnson. Each Quicksilver was constructed from a complete Fiero donor car, which was dismantled at the Zimmer factory in order to lengthen the chassis by 16″. The Fiero bodywork was replaced by a new fiberglass body with styling similar to the Lincoln Mark series but with a sloping nose and pop-up hidden headlamps. The interior was trimmed in leather and wood, and the new body had increased luggage space in the front. The retail price of the Quicksilver was $52,000.[3]
Both models were built in the same factory in Pompano Beach, Florida, on simultaneous production lines between the years 1979 to 1988.[4] Ford supplied new Mustangs, which were then modified by stretching the frame for a longer wheelbase and modifying the bodywork etc. The Mustang VIN was retained as it met all the required US safety features at the time.”

The other details about bankruptcy, some guy named Zimmer (no relation to Zimmer corporation) buying the rights to Zimmer motor cars… wowsers. What a story!
-Stan (the ever-curious Googling Stan…)
The part about “designed by former General Motors designer Don D.A. Johnson” makes me think Don quit GM because they wouldn’t build his designs. So we ended up with the Quicksilver which retailed for FOUR TIMES the cost of a loaded ‘86 Fiero. I have no words. Who would have paid that kind of money for such an ugly car? For 15% more money a buyer could have purchased a NEW Ferrari 328 in 1986 which is still a beautiful looking car today.
The line to slap David in Tampa, or in any other Florida city of his choosing, begins behind me.
This is a bunker busting weapon of mass destruction of all
competition at Radwood. An absolute cheat code.
The detractors here don’t understand marching to the beat of a different drummer or automotive brinksmanship. This Fiero is a polarizing, beautifully styled affront to bland sensibilities, a poke to the eye of complacency. This is the Heather Graham rollergirl of cars.
If it makes ordinary people upset then count me in.

I think this is more comparable to Mark Wahlberg’s Dirk Diggler in the same film.
Or at least the costume.
“KEEP . . . . HEATHER GRAHAM’S NAME . . . OUT . . . YOUR DAMN . . . MOUTH!!!!!!!!!”
As much as I hate to admit it, the Quicksilver would have fit right in Boogie Nights. Perfect analogy. Hideous car, but spot-on reference.
