5k: Winter Wanderlust: 1995 Ford Bronco

Mobility, along with baseball and the Snuggie, is what makes this country great (EIC Vince: Don’t forget about apple pie, McDonalds and the atom bomb!). But there’s only so much mobility you can extract from your
four-cylinder Hondas and two-seat MGAs. Satisfy your winter wanderlust with this 1995 Ford Bronco offered for $5,000 in Minneapolis, MN via craigslist. Words and tip from DT commenter & contributor  slowcarSLOW-MPGlol.

This is
the Clinton-era Bronco – the one after the obnoxiously back-country and
notoriously tippy Bronco IIs’ base models of the mid-80s were outsold
by the posh Eddie Bauer editions because outdoorsy Gen-Xers couldn’t
afford the Mercedes G-classes and the Lexus RX wasn’t even on paper yet.
Removing the rear hatch on this clean-shaven Bronco made it illegal for
road use, and 1994-1996 models came with airbags. Anyway, it was good
enough for O.J. Simpson.

In high
school, my buddy had to stop driving his Bronco to school because of a
sudden bee infestation. After the first frost killed off that problem,
we used it as a plow truck, but not before practicing full opposite lock
drifting in the untouched powder behind a Salvation Army.

Broncos
shared F-150 and Mustang components, which makes maintenance easy and
explains the similarly horsey name. This one has the ancient but sturdy
351 Windsor engine and lacks all manners of rust, even the rear fender
stuff common on most Broncos. Or you can spend $12,000 for one with a front differential painted in the Texas flag theme.

Broncos
are probably what modern automakers benchmark as they churn out
“lifestyle vehicles:” off road guts, undeniable machismo, and concrete
solidity. Old Broncos make great restomod candidates. New ones without
issues, like this one, are well-mannered enough for highway duty. Or, as
the every man’s tank, like Ford intended.
