5k: Seller Submission: 1984 BMW 318i
This next BMW coupe is a seller submission from an owner who says he has been working hard on it for the last couple of months, replacing a ton of things, and now he’s selling it. Great! No money better spent on a car than the previous owner’s. Find this 1984 BMW 318i offered for $5,299 in Temecula, CA via craigslist. Seller submission from David G.
The BMW 318i was the base model for BMW’s e30 generation 3-series. The 3-series is well known for its sweet singing inline-6 engines, but the base 318i and M3 used 4-bangers, as does a brand new 328i today (a turbocharger inline-4!).
Under the hood of the E30 318i is a M42 inline-4 cylinder 1.8 liter engine that puts out 105 horsepower and 108 ft-lbs of torque. The 4-cylinder powered E30s are actually quite fun to drive, great weight distribution and a playful need to rev it out to go anywhere quickly.

Question for seller….how did it accrue 100k miles "behind an RV"? Obviously there's no hitch mount on the front, so it required a dolly. If it were towed front wheels down, then the mileage wouldn't have accrued. If it were towed rear wheels down, unless you disconnected the driveshaft every time, then the gearbox and differential do have 200k miles on them. Basically, I must know, WHY NOT USE A DOLLY THAT KEPT ALL WHEELS OFF THE GROUND–I MUST KNOW (pounds desk emphatically)?
Yes there was a hitch mount at the time the vehicle was purchased. The reason the previous owner didn't use a dolly? I don't know. The hitch mount is still with me if someone needs "proof"
Gotcha. Thanks man….that was bugging me trying to figure it out. 🙂 GLWS
It's actually still on in the pictures if you look closely, the two black hook looking things, hard to see.

The 318i script on the trunk appears to be at an angle. Any idea why? Any accident history?
Just my opinion, but unless this is a no stories car with a good documentation history, $5299 seems like strong money for an earlier E30 318i showing 200K on the odometer.
Camera angle? Holds a clean title & no signs of damage. Maybe loose mounts… Not sure, it looks fine to me.
Engine in US spec 318i is the SOHC 8 valve M10. Same block as in the 2002, albeit with electronic fuel injection. M42 was all new 16 valve DOHC first seen in North America in the 1990/91 318i 4 door and 318is 2 door. 134 HP vs. the M10's 105.
