5k: Rare Silver: 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280C 4-spd W114
The Mercedes-Benz W114/115 chassis is the often overlooked E-class predecessor chassis that is overshadowed by the prettier W108/109 chassis. The big S-Class ancestor W108 with its fancier front end and stacked headlamps is a bargain classic, so the downmarket W114 is forced into an even more compromised market situation…bad news for “collectors” but great news for folks who want to run/drive cheap classics. Find this 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280C W114 for sale in State College, PA offered for $4,250 buy-it-now on ebay.
This W114 isn’t just the average running/driving coupe on the road, it is a 4-speed and equipped with European style H4 halogen headlights. The US DOT did not allow the use of halogen lights before 1992, even though they had been lighting up roads all over the rest of the world for decades.
The W114 is powered by the M110, a 2.8 liter inline-6 good for 160 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The medium sized coupe won’t be the fastest car on the block; it will be a stately cruiser but it does provide a certain level of cool with a manual gearbox and great durability.
It would have been nice for the seller to include a single properly framed photo, but the car looks good for the price. See another Euro-styled W114? email us here: tips@dailyturismo.com
Euro-styled but still US-bumpered, unfortunately.
I'm aching that I can't make a run at this since I'm elbow deep in Opel bills.
The W114/115 was actually the E-Class predecessor, and W108 was the S-Class of the time (their badges actually read XXXS/SE/SEL). The W201 190E would be the proper C-Class ancestor.
The linked photo shows how much bloat the E-class has gained over the years: wikicars.org/en/Image:Mercedes-Benz_E-Class_Lineup_1.jpg
Came here to say the exact thing:
W108 –> S-Class
W114 –> E-Class
That's the way I always thought it worked and, looking at your linked picture, the same say Mercedes sees it too
Car looks clean; hope it sells to someone who would understand it (not a huge fan of the wheels, but they're not a deal-breaker for me)
Good luck with the sale
BigE – you and anon are correct, I was just free-styling on my MBZ C,E,S designations instead of doing proper research on wikipedia. Post updated!
Thanks, EIC Vince
I was about to bid on this thing after talking with the boss! But suddenly he changes the BIN to $6250 but says he'll take $4250 in the description?!? Weird, I'll pass.
Looks like this ones has been cleansed of any Sandusky-juice. Probably way too early, but Vanderbilt Football supporters will take any and all swipes for stealing their beloved Coach Franklin. Please rescue this Coupe before Child Services gets involved.
