5k: Other Side Of The Tracks: 1969 BMW 1600
The BMW New Class was a line of compact sedans sold from 1962 to 1977 and is currently riding a wave of appreciation that is unusual for mass production car like the 1600/2002. Most 1600/2002s are getting fancy paint jobs and later fuel injected engines along with big digit prices, so it is nice to see one with a reasonable price tag, even if it is from the other side of the tracks. Find this 1969 BMW 1600 for sale in Oakland, CA for $5,000 via craigslist. Tip from Kaibeezy.
Five grand doesn’t get you much in a classic BMW these days – usually a total rust bucket or some automatic transmission equipped undesirable, but this 1600 (aside from looking a bit ugly in the paint dept) runs/drives well and looks straight for a $5k car.
The M10 inline-4 cylinder engine makes 85 horsepower and 95 ft-lbs of torque – nothing to write home about, but it’ll get the job done when putting around town or trying to keep with modern traffic.
The interior doesn’t look as bad as the outside, perhaps this car has gotten some new interior parts or been given a few seats from a good example.

Despite being locationally challenged (Bring-A-Sidearm? whoops wrong site j/k), this is the kind of advert I like to see. Wordy and at times irrelevant (much like me), it gives the prospective buyer a good run-down of the car and more importantly, the knowledge that the seller is an enthusiast and knows what's going on with the car. The kind of person you could probably pump for more info about some secrets the car might be hiding. Or not.
Gee DT way too harsh. The seller clearly knows his stuff, has a bent sense of historical parallelism AND is selling a hot rodded 1600……with which one can do as they wish building on the existing platform. Without guilt! Whats not to like? Leave the garage queens to the avoirdupois challenged. Wish I had five grand
