5k: Ocean Hopping Keitora: 1991 Subaru Sambar
How much more Idaho can you get than a small town named Salmon with a population of 3,112? Perhaps a town named Potato or Spud could be even more descriptive of the 14th largest and 39th most populous state in the Union, but today’s feature has floated a long way from home. Find this 1991 Subaru Sambar offered for $4,500 in Salmon, ID via craigslist. Tip from AbnMike.
The Subaru Sambar was introduced in 1961 as Japan’s first Keitora (軽トラ) or kei class truck. This fifth generation Sambar is a long way from the original 2-cylinder powered version, but it still puts the motor behind the rear wheels and offers a surprising amount of versatility for its overall dimensions while conforming with the Japanese kei-car (keijidōsha or light automobile) regulations..
The Sambar is powered by a 660 cc EN07 inline-4 cylinder gasoline engine
located in the rear that puts out 54 horsepower into the rear wheels with the help of an intercooled supercharger. Add four wheel drive and a 6-speed manual gearbox hardly makes this thing a GTR competitor, but it’ll certainly be as much fun as anything else you can find for less than $5k.

Not the first thing I think of when I read "rear engine, AWD, 6-spd, turbo" but definitely the most affordable.
Yeah, a 997 C4S it ain't, but…oh, it'd be tragic to turn it into some kind of driftmobile, wouldn't it?
Hee hee heee…
It'd be a shame… a damn shame. Sure hope someone here doesn't try to do exactly what you just said…
I tried to convince the wife to sell the 2008 Silverado and get this instead. She said no. I told her I'd sell it anyway since technically its mine and she can ride a bicycle and there's no way I'm selling my 87 FJ60.
I'm glad I'm going out of town tomorrow.
I wish there was a photo of someone standing next to this to really show the size. Or lack of size.
I've driven a number of these overseas. They're quite space efficient. You can fit four real live human beings in these. Not that I'd recommend it, with 4 dudes and gear, cornering at any speed above walking was scary as hell. Here's a pic from the googles:

WANT.
You would be surprised what you see in Idaho. We were there last week visiting relatives for spring break. The weather was sunny and warm. We saw a E-type and a Spitfire out with their tops down along with quite few muscle cars & trucks. Last summer when we were there we spotted an XK-150 and Alfa GTV.
After watching the Coeur d'Alene my classic car episode this weekend I would have to agree!
Shhh! Gianni! There are NO cars in Idaho. No no no no no no.
You're too late, K2!
I've already contacted Gianni and each of the cars he mentioned are currently in four separate enclosed haulers, making their way to my secret lair by way of four distinct routes. The truck drivers will have to be sacrificed, of course, but such are the minor allowances one must make in order to prove one's point, truth be damned.
(I will see to it that these will all be available on CL in San Fransisco, Sacramento and Astoria by next week.)
I am in soooo much trouble now. Great, just great. Eh, what's new.
We go over to the Spokane/CdA area 2x a year to visit Mrs. G's side of the family. In the warmer months there are some cool classics that you wouldn't expect out and about. In the winter we see cars used as beaters with heaters that we don't normally see in nouveau riche Seattle. Plus the worlds greatest junk yard is just along I-90 in Spokane.

Lego duplo with lots of glass…. I like it. My wife is four foot nothing would probably like this little tyke. Although she hates our current car the pig(08 G5) as she does not feel safe in it.
Don't forget Suzy.

I realize some of these are imported as farm vehicles, which gives them some sort of exemption. (not actually, but people think so.) How exactly is this legal in the USA? Shouldn't be here until next year.
Gee, I wonder if Cal DMV would let it cross the border?
My cup runneth over! Damn this is a fine looking little truck!
