The early 1970s Dodge Dart was small unibody sedan built on the third generation A-body platform. Sales of the A-body were phenomenal when Valiant, Dart, Demon, Duster, 3700, Centura, Charger, Valiant Drifter, Valiant Pacer and Scamp sales were all combined. This 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger hardtop, for sale in Westland, MI is currently bidding for $5,500 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go (buy-it-now for $8k).
The 1972 Dodge Dart was updated from the 1971 model year with a new grille & parking lamps on the outside and a number of small interior changes including new seats. The 1972 Dart is a nice looking car and looks the part of a classic American muscle car from any angle. It was sold as an economy car when new and is still an economy muscle car today.
This Dart is equipped with the 225 cubic inch (3.7 liter) optional slant-6 that puts out 110 horsepower and 185 ft-lbs of torque. The 225 is an old school non-crossflow inline-6 with an cast iron intake/exhaust manifold designed more for fitment/cost than power or fuel economy. It would be easy to swap in a 318 V8 and gain a bunch of performance, but it would be a shame to do it to such a low mile classic.
The claimed original 36k miles and 2 year old restoration certainly make this classic tempting. Add the asking price of less than the cost of a cheap rebuild and this car looks even better. Anyone in the market for a early ’70s classic hardtop would be advised to check this one out…and bring cash!
