429 ThunderJet 4-Spd: 1969 Ford Galaxie XL Sportsroof

When I saw the photos for this next car I first thought it was a Torino…but then I realized it was an LTD…except it wasn’t. It is a Ford Galaxie (not a Galaxy) XL, which is a big 429 ThunderJet V8 powered 2-door behemoth that has a set of rear sail panels that simulate a fastback roofline. It comes from a time when car designers had free rein to style as they pleased with little concern for cost, crash safety, external visibility, ease of repair, and various other plebeian concerns. And if you thought it looks good from the outside, just look at the driver centric dash pod…wow. Find this 1969 Ford Galaxie XL Sportsroof offered for $23,500 in Glendale, AZ via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Never mind me…I am just here to introduce the Hugh Crawford post below. And now ladies and gentlemen…Hugh Crawford!
Without air bags in the A-pillars, and no B-pillars whatsoever, outward visibility is probably a lot better than most modern cars. The crash safety, though, reminds me of a joke I heard a while ago:
“My Volvo was designed with eight carefully engineered crumple zones to absorb the energy of a crash. Where are the crumple zones on your land yacht?”
“They’re on your Volvo.”
Is it a museum exhibit? What’s up with the info stenciled on the window? It’s not a “for sale” sign. Maybe to let people know it’s for sale without saying so? I got a ticket for parking in town with a for sale sign on the car once. I was completely bamboozled, never heard of such a thing. And then paid the county for the knowledge.
My city has that law as well. I don’t think that they go out of their way to enforce it. It is just there for people who want to use the shopping mall as a used car lot.
Out here in Los Angeles area there are plenty of people who use the shopping mall as their used car lot…but that’s why I own manual transmission vehicles with poor traction. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/watching-british-police-chase-down-162500249.html
Quite an impressive example of the British stiff upper lip on that video.
Never seen a muscle car with a driver centric dashboard like that. Reminds me of the RX7 and Supra dashes from the 90’s. Super cool.
I think Saab was known for driver centric dashes back in the day too. Like the 9000. https://driventowrite.com/2014/12/22/theme-dashboards-1986-saab-9000/
