429 Thunderjet: 1971 Ford Thunderbird

Whenever someone asks me to explain why I like the Thunderbird, I always tell them it is because of the hooknose styling and suicide doors. The questioner will then look around to see if I’m being followed by men in white coats…but I’m not, because I lost them years ago, but if you want a rad Thunderbird, don’t get one with a porthole window or a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, get one with a 429 cubic inch Thunderjet V8 and 4-doors. Find this 1971 Ford Thunderbird offered for $6,500 in South River, NJ via craigslist. Tip from Art C.

Hello 9 miles per gallon! The 24 gallon tank gets you around 200 miles of range if you live in a flat part of the country.
My 1970 with bucket seats was one of the best all around cars I ever owned. In the 80s and into the 90s, it served often to tow to the Historics and other racetracks…10 mpg. Used as a daily…10 mpg. Cruise or town or highway…10 mpg. Aside from the hp and torque, there’s a 5 link, coil spring rear axle under that 2.5 tons of metal.
Lived in Topanga and ran the canyon in the wee hours, once getting a tongue-lashing from a park ranger after seeing the red light and pulling over to let him catch up. Thought he was real police.
Also used to exit the 101 at a pretty good clip towards the Hollywood Bowl. Exit right, then the overpass arcs left with a crest before the apex, merging onto Cahuenga Blvd. Done correctly, the car would get light and slide from the left lane to the edge of the right lane.
Young and stupid was so much fun.
