4-Speed All Original: 1970 BMW 2002

You don’t find many sub $20k BMW 2002s floating around for sale these days, at least not ones that aren’t complete rust buckets or in some sad state of disassembly. If today’s example isn’t hiding some serious rust somewhere, then it is a spanking good deal. These BMW 2002s are fun to drive, have decent power-to-weight and are easy to work on if you are a home mechanic. Find this 1970 BMW 2002 offered for $19,800 in San Francisco, CA via craigslist. There is no rear view mirror
It’s a BMW. Why would you need to see what is behind you?
OOF. I sold my ’74 in 2018 just before 02 prices exploded. I had a feeling they would, but needed $$ for down payment on house. No regrets, but would love to be the steward of one of these again, down the road.
I had two of these. Both sunroof coupes. One with dealer installed Behr or coolaire a/c, one I dropped a Gettrag 5 speed into to replace the original slushbox. One was Baikal Blue and the other that metallic green, gruensomething or other. Both were a blast to drive. NEVAH did I EVAH think that someone would ask 20 large for a small bumper ’70.or for that matter any 02 except maybe a TI or TII. At some point value has become decoupled from raw dollars, at about the same time I could no longer afford the ask 🙂
Given recent price trends of collectibles, $20k for a roundie in this apparent condition doesn’t seem out of line at all. Wish I had bought in when these were still undervalued.
I am no BMW enthusiast. Lying. I am on my 3rd MINI… as produced by them bavarians. current one is 10. y.o. now and gave me a delightful moonlight ride tonight…
Still, while i am slightly familar with 2002s, i was stunned by the full profile pic. LOOK at how THIN those rear roof pillars are! Seen any mass produced 21st C car with such delicate roof supports? I think not. the things we lose in the name of progress.
