20 Valves 5 Cylinders: 1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro

When was the last time you saw a Type44 (aka C3) Audi on the road? These things were purchased by yuppies back in the day, but they were less funky than a Saab, and more funky than a BMW. The 3B inline-5 engines made a decent amount of power with the help of a turbocharger and grip was great with quattro all-wheel-drive…but maintenance adds up as the miles add up. Find this 1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro offered for $8,500 in Annapolis, MD via craigslist. Tip from Cory.

This looks like the kind of car you would instantly regret bringing home. In fact, you would probably pregret it.
Yeah, this is just expensive enough to where I think it could easily turn into a lawn ornament if something went wrong. But the inner maniac in me would love to have one of those crazy fire spitting turbo quattro old school manual transmission Audi builds. Unfortunately my wallet can’t support that kind of project yet.
pregret!! That is about half the cars listed on this website.
I would call this car a siren “ dangerous creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck (financial ruin) on the rocky coast of their island.”
My Dad bought one of these new. There are a number of car manufacturers who still have not approached the driving experience of this sedan, 40 years later. These were more reliable than Audis to follow, and the 5 cylinders are legendary for their longevity. Problem areas for these were rust and electrical systems. Wiring harnesses were the big concern in Audis of this era.
Lucky…..Same era, my dad bought the 100. I was pushing him hard to go for the 200, but no luck. I recall the MSRP back then being around $45k and I remember marveling over the brochure about the 145mph top speed.
“Not approached the driving experience…”
In what way? Genuinely curious. I’ve always been baffled by the engine layout and wondered how they could be good to drive.
