1996 BMW M3 E36
BMW’s E36 M3 has been on Santa’s nice list for at least the last decade because it offers one of the best driving experiences for under $10k. Handling is superb, acceleration is good (it could stand a few more horses, but the US version was given a detuned engine) and build quality is decent. Find this 1996 BMW M3 E36 here on eBay offered for $6,995 buy-it-now located in Niagara Falls, NY. This
post is part of DT’s 2016 Birthday Celebration of 100 cars;
enjoy the ride!
The E36 was first offered in the US market in 1995 in coupe and 5-speed
manual transmission behind a 3.0 liter S50B30US inline-6 good for 240
horsepower and 225 ft-lbs of torque. It was a great combination (I
should know, I owned drove one everyday for about 2 years) and slightly
upgraded in 1996 with the introduction of the 3.2 liter S52B32US good
for the same 240 horsepower, but a bump up in torque to 240 ft-lbs. Compared to the ludicrous prices of E30 M3s, these cheap E36 M3s are a breath of cheap air.

My OCD kicked in and is forcing me to be a bimmer snob: the e36 started in '92 in the US
You can't get into more trouble for less money. I had one a year ago for about 6 months before the interior started falling apart in front of my eyes. Dang door panels, window regulators, and headliner!

How are these for reliability at 200k miles?

While its not an M3 my bought new '95 3181c vert is at 294000 miles. The interiors are crap as are the M3's.Formed plastic door panels from a Volga River plastics plant in Novorograd. CRAP! I'd buy an M3 if I could find one that hasnt been throttled. IE less than 50 K miles….I'd look at the radiator overflow tank, the oil filter canister,the head for leaks, the valve cover for leaks, the timing belt and on and on….that said when my car gets to 300,000 miles I will feel that I have justified the incredible stupid MSRP of 32000 back in 1995!
