The mechanical bits in the Nivas were robust as hell and very advanced when they came out. The problem is, time does keep moving I’m told and before you know it, people aren’t raving about overhead cams and coil springs anymore.

A quick anecdote: at the age of 18, a friend and I once drove from Raleigh, NC to Montreal to go scout out and import absolutely anything Lada. The plan was to buy the best one we test drove – a 1995 Niva ‘Bandito’ edition – and drive it across and unmanned border crossing in rural Quebec to dodge the 25 year rule. Thank god we got distracted by a big night on Rue University and become too hungover to plot federal offenses.
