The Fiat 500 marked the long awaited return of Fiat to the US market, approximately 25 years after the Italians fled the new world. The world has changed a lot since the original introduction of Fiat motor carriages in 1908. Today, currency is fiat and a Fiat is a Chrysler, so you could say you use a fiat to buy a Chrysler from a Fiat dealer…or something.
Under the hood of a 500 in Abarth spec is a 1.4 liter version of Fiat’s multiair that puts out 160 horsepower and 170 ft-lbs of torque. You get a 5-speed manual gear box mated to the front wheels and enough lift-off snap-crack-pop coming out of the tailpipes to start your own cereal company.

I wonder if they have some kind of system to prevent the driver from making espresso (like the car needs to be going 0 miles an hour, or there needs to be weight in the passenger seat to operate it while in motion.) Because you KNOW someone is going to be texting with one hand and making coffee with the other.
They do. It's the lawyers who won't allow Fiat to sell it here in the States. Easily gotten around though; just buy one on eBay. So it's going to happen, if it already hasn't. But it doesn't matter because Fiat can't be sued over it. I'm sure there are plenty of systems like that for cars on the market.

I violate UK road law at least half a dozen times a day, and that's not even counting the every minute I spend on the wrong side of the road…

There is a guy in my town who has a massive and very expensive car collection with just about everything ranging from classic Bentleys to Ferrari Enzos. What does he drive daily? A works mini and a modified Abarth 500.
I think so and thought it was great fun. Interesting that he has both a MINI and a Abarth. I wonder why. He's probably just another rich guy that just gathers cars like a squirrel gathers nuts. Say, DT is like that squirrel….
I gotta tell you, I really wanted to like these cars, but so far the general consensus among enthusiasts I know who bought one is massive disappointment—-most of them bought them to daily drive, and the car's shortcomings seem to just overwhelm whatever fun comes from driving them. I've seen the same sentiment in a lot of the road tests I've seen in magazines. One buddy bought one and disliked it so much he sold it 4 months later, losing $5k in the process. He's like me, in that $5k isn't just chump change, so if he was willing to take that hit to wash his hands of it, I know he disliked it greatly.

Wow, I daily drive mine and I love it. It is hilarious to drive, fairly frugal and it will baby, if you've got one. I got a screaming deal at 17k and it's still worth about 13-14k 2 years later. It is loud, bouncy and unsophisticated. You feel like you're driving an angry barstool because of the seating position. But that said, it also feels special; few things this side of 15k with a factory warranty exist in the market today.
Glad you like it Rod…..If I implied a sweeping indictment of the car (and I probably did), it was unintentional. My sample size of friends I was referencing who had bought one of these was 4, so I am sure there are just as many for whom this car is the right seat for the right butt.
Yeah, I guess my take on something like this is that you've got to be willing to accept the warts, I've driven a couple cars that run around on 205/40-17s and aside from the ride considerations every little pavement crack and the corner of every driveway is a potential rim-ravaging event. My wife would destroy a wheel a month.
I love mine too, but then I've been driving a '71 MGB for the last 5 years, so now I feel positively cosseted.
It has character, feels like the spiritual successor to the original Mini much more so than the new mini does and laughs right along with you every time you try some silly traffic evading maneuver. Way more fun than my Lotus Elise, and attracts a lot less unwanted attention too.
My only complaint on the one I test drove was the the shifter felt like stirring a bowl of pudding. Super mushy and very remote feeling. The rest of the car was great. Especially the exhaust note.
When I was in college, twenty years ago, I had an original Fiat 500. Where '500' actually meant '500'.
Guys would always try to give me a hard time. "It's a girls car." "You should get a V8." Or one witty guy, "I like how the colour matches your lipstick."
Meanwhile, pretty girls would surprisingly often say, "Hey man, cool car. Wanna take me for a ride?"
I wonder if Doge coin is the fiat currency you are looking for although you might need to add a little d to it.
