15k: Low Mile 6-Spd: 1993 Porsche 968 Coupe
The Porsche 968 was the final evolution of the watercooled front-engine Prickmobile that started with the Porsche 924 back in 1976. It didn’t have the sonorous V8 of the 928, but it had cleaner styling and swooping headlight design inspired by the Porsche 959 supercar, except they popped up and 9 out of 10 DTer’s agree that pop-up lights are awesome. Building a great sports car is a bit like breeding the next American Pharoah, you start with a bunch of heffers, send the losers to the glue factory and keep breeding the best together. In the case of the 968, the lineage includes the
1976 Porsche 924 that made 95 horsepower and shared an engine with the
Audi 100 & AMC Gremlin. More mule than thoroughbred, the 924 lived
for many years – even sharing a stable with is Porsche engined foal –
the 944 – from 1982-1988. The 944 was sent to the glue factory before
the birth of the 968 in 1992 – and it can probably be said with
confidence that the 968 is the best of the front engined Poroughbreds.
Speaking of “factories,” the 968 was the first of the 924/944 line to be
built in a Porsche factory – the previous breeds being assembled at an Audi
plant under contract from Porsche AG.
Power in this 48k mile example (sold by a reseller who claims it had only one prior owner) comes from a 3.0 liter DOHC inline 4 cylinder engine making 236 horsepower and 225
ft-lbs of torque. The 968’s inline-4 is noted for its enormous cylinders (it was the second
largest 4 cylinder engine in a production engine from any manufacturer
at that time), but don’t think the 968 engine belongs in a John Deere. It’s actually a nice oversquare
design that revvs freely to its redline and is mated to a 6 speed manual transaxle out back.

The 944/968 family is still one of the prettiest cars ever built.

I started thinking about 968s a while back, and how much they bear family resemblance to the 959 and 993 in front. They are kind of forgotten footnotes at this point – not as affordable as a 944, but nowhere near as much demand as any aircooled 911.
How long will they stay in a sub-stratospheric price range? Will the new owner get ~$20k worth of enjoyment from this sub-50k mile example? These are the questions I'm asking myself.
Then I saw a derelict 968 on a flatbed tow truck which restored my faith that dirt cheap examples are still out there.
The biggest problem with an 968, as far as I'm concerned, is that the TCO is going to approach that of C5 and C6 'Vettes that are just about equally nice places to be and FAR, FAR faster.
Plus, I just have this emotional distaste for a 3-liter four. It's perfectly RIGHT in a '30s Bentley, but by 1960 the universe had passed that by.
I would love me a 968.
I would rather have a 968 than an air cooled 911. Really!
The only other Porsche that I would consider kicking a 968 to the curb for would be for a Cayman. And it seems the price point between the two is narrowing.
So I guess I should say "I would love me a 2009 or newer Cayman" (No IMS issue)
30's Bentley under-square engines have NOTHING to do with a Porsche engine design. Suggest getting past your emotions and DRIVE a 968 and see what its like. Then make up your mind.

I've driven one, they work great, they're smooth enough though I'm not wild about the sound…
…but I'm saving my two-seater pennies for a C6 Z06.
As a former owner, count me in as a big fan of the 944/968 cars. I loved mine even though is was apparently a "Prickmobile". I though that terms was reserved for BMW and Audi drivers. No? Purchasing a 944/968 is an emotion-based decision, not a logical one. If you approach them with the later frame of mind, you're going to be disappointed.

If you haven't watched any of AMC's halt and catch fire show about the dawn of the computer age it really reinforces the "prickmobile" associated with Porsche's. The douchiest character in the show drives a black 924 while the cool smart guy drives an old subaru/mazda/saab or something. They don't show many good scene's with that one so I'm blanking.

Not to jump on your bandwagon (okay, I am) but the car was a 944, driven by the mad genius without whom nothing would have gotten done, the other characters content (as it were) to sit on their hands collecting a paycheck.
The other car you're referring to was a Toyota Corolla. Yep, cool and smart. I know how DTers are about their 'Rollas…they're smoove! But the real star of the show is the Ford LTD Country Squire. Now that's cool and smart! 😀

Interesting how many DTers find the Javan just…meh (good gawd I hate that word…it's always used by people who are meh…hey, wait a minute!). That's probably because they have three in the garage and they were involved in the original design. That or they just don't have time since the new Huayra arrived.

Oh I don't deserve near the credit for that comment. Gordon may not fit into the "cool" category as pop culture sees it, but my opinion is that he's the cool guy, but Joe would be the guy that gets all the ladies in his Porsche. I didn't particularly enjoy the Ashton Kutchor jobs movie, but I do recall him screaming through the hollywood hills at some point in his 928 while raging about something stupid.
