The term 10 second car gets tossed around by the Fast and Furious crowd as some kind of goal that can be accomplished by bolting on enough shiny aftermarket parts and their accompanying stickers (NOS baby NOS!!). The truth is that it takes much more, chiefly, the total destruction of any potential transportation capabilities of the subject car, no trunk, no roll up windows, no license plates…etc. This 2001 Mazda Mazdaspeed Protegé has been converted into a full track only 10 second 1/4 mile capable front-drive drag car and is for sale in Los Angeles, CA for $13,999 via craigslist.
The Mazdaspeed Protegé was original available with a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline4 that put out 170 horsepower, but this one has been given the full Fast/Furious treatment and puts out 536 horsepower on E85 (denatured ethanol) and weights only 1880 lbs with driver. The resulting package runs a remarkable 1.6 second 60-ft times on slicks with power going only to the front wheels and can run the 1/8th mile in 6.61 seconds at 118 mph.
Our first thoughts were that this would be a great way to pickup a cheap high power drivetrain for a stock street driven Protegé, but now our thoughts have moved on to using the engine in the back of a Corvair or to power a scooter. See a better future donor car? email us here: email@example.com
