Ludacris once eloquently stated, “I left the Jag and I took the Rolls.” Mr. Christopher Bridges (now that’s an English name if ever there was one) is right. $12,000 is a price point shared with an assortment of Jaguar road machines – cars with similar class and arguably similar lurking electrical problems – and, of course, a Nissan Versa. But no Jag can approach the panache of a classic Rolls Royce, let alone one of 35 built by English coach builder James Young. Find this 1966 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow James Young Coupe in Front Royal, VA for $12,000 via craigslist.

James Young handled the coupe production of the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in 1966 and 1967. While 15 were badged as Bentleys, 35 bore the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. This one is sold by Rolls Royce specialists Moyer Motorcars, which should inspire more confidence than the usual craigslist fare of “would consider trade for a slammed Civic or lifted truck, or ammo.”

You want patina? You got patina, and a mostly complete interior. Because of its 5,300-pound curb weight, pace will be slow from the 6.23L V8/4-speed Hydramatic combination. Although you’ll find more than enough torque to haul your finest sows to the state fair. Should you find yourself with extra sows and the need for more power, there’s room under the hood for truly anything your imagination can come up with. For the money, you could get a road-ready Rolls of the same vintage, albeit one with less historical significance… and patina. Clear your calendar for months (at least ) of chasing hand-built parts around merry ol’ England. Or let it deteriorate for that rat rod look.
