10k: Patina And Pride: 1957 Chevrolet 210 4-Door Wagon
The 1957 Chevrolet was available in a multitude of configurations and is the quintessential classic American sedan to own. It probably has something to do with the fact that Chevrolet built 700,000 infinity of the ’57 model or the introduction of GM’s overhead valve small-block V8 that trounced all over Ford’s flat-head V8 all takers. Whatever the reason, the American hot rod scene is saturated with 57 Chevys of all sorts, and locating a running/driving survivor is a treat. Find this 1957 Chevrolet 210 4-door wagon sale in La Jolla, CA for $8,950 via craigslist.
In stark contrast to the over restored, over hotrodded or under driven (low or zero mile classic) ’57 Chevys that litter the auction houses like Barrett-Jackson and Mecum, this 4-door wagon is simple, rusty and honest. Don’t mistake it for some rusted out barn find that needs a full restoration either, because it is a basic running/driving classic.
This ’57 Chevy is powered by a 265 or 283 cubic inch small block V8, which puts out something from 162 to 185 horsepower depending on which engine is equipped. The seller doesn’t specify, but perhaps a Chevy expert can help us out in the comments below.

Ford beat Chevy to market with an OHV V-8 by two years. The Y-block appeared in late 1952 as a '53 model. The SBC didn't go on sale until the new '55 came out in the fall of '54. The flat-head was long gone. So I don't know how that's "trouncing" in 1957. Also Chevy built 1.5 MILLION cars in 1957 model year, but Ford only made 1.676 million (that doesn't include Mercury, Lincoln or trucks).
Gone already. Somebody scored a sweet new surf wagon!
And here I thought that the 239 OHV V-8 was the first in 1954 ford…
I normally use unverified 3rd party Russian websites for all DT fact checking, but when writing this article I just asked my neighbor, who for the sake of his family I will just call Jorge. It was hard to understand what he was saying as he slurred at me through a haze of cheap cigarette smoke and expensive Scotch, but when I wasn't trying to avoid getting spittle in my eye I thought I heard something about 57 Chevy with a shmall block and them damn Ferds were still using flat-heads. Obviously I was mistaken. Article updated.
hey, where can i get me some of them cheap cigarettes? so expensive these days
Cheap cigs and the Very Rare 57 Ford flathead V-8 !
Ford may indeed have released the Y block first but why are the various sanctioning bodies' record books littered with SBC's? Perhaps the same reason the SBC is the go-to choice for engine swaps, including most street rods like the revered Ford Deuce?
