10k: 390-Auto-Air: 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback

We automotive car pundits spend a great deal of time waxing nostalgic about cars with unassisted power steering,  manual transmissions with calf-cramping clutches and lambast weight-adding options like AC, ABS and heaters…but the truth is, sometimes, we just want to get into a car and be comfortable driving it places.  Not always…but sometimes.  This is the classic car for those sometimes, when you want classic looks, muscle car performance, and comfort.  Find this 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback for sale in Antioch, CA for $8,300 via craigslist.

The full sized third generation Ford Galaxie was built right in the sweetspot of the muscle car era, 1965-1968.  It enjoyed the flashy grills and chrome bumpers, free from 5mph impact requirements. Power came from big V8s with high compression and ample torque, free from emissions requirements.

Powering this Galaxie isn’t some anemic slant-6, it is a 390 cubic inch (6.4 liter) V8 and outfitted with a 2 barrel carburetor is good for 265 horsepower and 390 ft-lbs of tire melting torque.  This engine is perfect for the no-downshift passing maneuver but is only a few bolt on parts away from another 100 horsepower.

This cruiser is equipped with a rebuilt C-6 automatic transmission for left-leg free acceleration and has a converted to R134A air conditioning system that would be a welcome addition to many cars in the DT fleet.
