• If you are in the position of having to scrub off your cash reserves, select this or a MB V12 Coupe. Both are monstrously complex and expensive.

What a beautiful wagon. Awesome idea. Mind meltingly fragile.

    • I know very little about the W8, but I have a reasonable level of exposure to similarly-platformed VAG product.

I would not say they're 'fragile'. Some parts are much better made than, say, comparable BMW bits.

The problem is that there's so many of them, and they're packed in so tightly, that even minor jobs require four hours of preparatory disassembly to get to the thing that broke.

  • Well, that went over my limit pretty quickly. Given the mileage and the general aversion to these engines, I didn't expect this wagon to go this high.

    • What, $10K?

I have an Audi S6 Avant in the driveway, in slightly less photogenic condition and with previous collision damage, with an 01E transaxle and all the 6-speed swap parts in the back end. I hope I like it when it's done, because it won't be worth what I'll have put into it.

But we got almost 100K out of it in slushbox form, and as I now know how (and have the tools) to rebuild 5HP24 slushboxes in an afternoon maybe I can get some money out of the gearbox that comes out.
