    I think the issue is the need to redefine cheap in the modern car era.

    Cheap to me always was $5k or less, maybe $7500 if I was feeling flush. We're talking fun third-car project cars here…e30's, e28's, RX-7's, 2002's, 190e 16v's, you name it.

    Seems like the bar has moved to a point where for anything halfway desirable and enjoyable that has an "analog" feel, sub-$20k is a bargain. $15k 996's are a bargain. $15k e46 M3's are a bargain. $13k 944 Turbos, $18k e39 M5's, and $15k C5 Z06's are a bargain. $5k just ain't what it used to be.

      ^this. THIS is exactly it. I think in terms of $3k, $4k cars being everywhere…but the truth is that anything in the $3k-$4k range is just a few speed bumps away from the junk yard. $15k is the new $5. That is the unfortunate reality…or it is good because it means people have money and they aren't crushing cool cars anymore?
